EU telecom ministers sign support plan for 5G

2017-07-19 09:53:17

EU ministers have signed a declaration at an informal meeting in Tallinn underlining Europe's commitment to making 5G networks a success. The meeting of telecom ministers called by the Estonian presidency of the EU is expected to discuss plans to make Europe a global leader in 5G development and ensure the new mobile networks support the further progress of the digital economy and society.

Concrete measures cited in the declaration include ensuring the timely release of enough radio spectrum for 5G; increased cooperation and sharing of practical information on spectrum policy, including strengthening the EU's Radio Spectrum Policy Group; ensuring more transparent spectrum policy, with predictable, open, transparent and non-discriminatory administrative procedures; promoting the initial launch of 5G in major urban areas and along major transport routes before ensuring comprehensive coverage; maintaining interoperability and standardisation of 5G technology; supporting the roll-out of fibre networks for 5G backhaul; supporting the implementation of micro cells with simplified administrative procedures and fees; and ensuring a high-level dialogue on support for the development of wireless applications and services across the EU.

The two-day meeting is also expected to discuss the free movement of data, with a debate planned on making this the fifth core freedom for the EU.
