China Telecom to expand data center capacity, PoP network

2017-07-12 11:00:49

China Telecom has announced new projects designed to expand the company’s data center capacity in Hong Kong, and its points of presence (PoP) network across North America. The Tseung Kwan O data center is currently under construction in Hong Kong. China Telecom will build, operate and manage colocation areas for two of the new buildings, which are due to come on-stream in this year’s fourth quarter.

China Telecom has also expanded its Shatin data center in Hong Kong with the addition of a new floor for increased server capacity. It opened to the market in April. China Telecom Americas has expanded its network coverage in North America with three new PoPs, including one at Viawest’s Hillsboro, Oregon, data center; another at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME Group) Facility in Aurora, Illinois; and a third one at Cologix’s Montreal, Quebec, facility.

China Telecom expects its network expansion to boost its trans-Pacific proposition to meet bandwidth demand by offering customers hosting services and direct connectivity to ChinaNet, China’s largest internet backbone, and CN2, China Telecom’s MPLS network.

The announcement of China Telecom’s added capacity in Hong Kong follows a cooperation agreement signed in April by China Telecom, Global Switch and Daily-Tech, a developer and operator of data center infrastructure throughout China. Via this agreement, China Telecom can tap into Global Switch’s data center capacity outside mainland China. This includes Global Switch’s Tseung Kwan O data center in Hong Kong, which is currently being built. Global Switch owns the five-building site; CT will develop and manage colocation areas for two of the buildings.

With a total building area of 45,000 square meters and power capacity of up to 70 mega-volt amps (MVA), Tseung Kwan O will offer Tier 3 status, also providing access to local and international Tier 1 and Tier 2 carriers. The facility will also feature cloud and carrier neutrality, giving enterprises a choice of hosting, infrastructure and connectivity services; connectivity to the Asia-Pacific Gateway, Asia Submarine-cable Express and East Asia Crossing submarine cables, which will all land in the adjacent Tseung Kwan O cable station. Tseung Kwan O will also provide direct links to Hong Kong’s financial hub.
