2017-03-10 09:56:24

CORNING (WENY) -- The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is proposing cleanup plans for Corning's Houghton Plot neighborhood and nearby High School.

On March 22nd, the DEC and Department of Health will hold a public meeting session at the Radisson Hotel, beginning at 6:30. The agencies will outline proposed remediation plans for dealing with contaminated soil in the area. Earlier in the afternoon, from 3-5PM, agency staff and Corning Incorporated will be available to answer the public's questions concerning the Study Area.

Remediation on affected areas could begin this summer. Proposed remediation steps include: Excavation and off site disposal, Soil Covers placed over a demarcation area, excavations backfilled with clean soil, environmental easements placed on school properties and Memorial Stadium with site management plans, residential site management plans, and interim site management plans regarding contamination on properties until remediation is complete.

The DEC is also accepting public comments until April 10th. Then, the agency will review all public comments, and revise remedial decisions as necessary. Remediation of contaminated properties could begin in the summer of 2017. Work will be scheduled so as to not impact school activities.
