Sturbridge’s OFS Sees Limitless Horizons in Communications

2017-03-01 15:22:23

STURBRIDGE — OFS makes fiber optic cable, that helps people communicate. Demand for its products is higher than ever. And, it's hiring."That's our fundamental driving force," said chief executive officer and chairman Timothy F. Murray. "We help people to use light to do things primarily for the communications network of the world."

The global designer, manufacturer and supplier of fiber-optic solutions employs 1,900 people worldwide, has 10 factories on six continents, and is growing as demand for optical communications infrastructure continues to skyrocket.Close to home, OFS is seeking production workers, engineers and trades and maintenance employees to grow its Sturbridge workforce from 125 to 140.

The company is also expanding its Norcross, Georgia, headquarters, and building a factory in Morocco to make cable for Europe and Africa."We're making pretty important investment in Sturbridge, for example, because of the demand in the communications market for more connections," Mr. Murray said.

"There's still so much to do in building connections in the world. There's tons to do in the U.S., Europe and in Africa and India where there are several billion people just starting out. ... That enormous opportunity is what gives (us) staying power as a business."Mr. Murray noted that OFS's roots date back to the 1800s, with AT&T, which was the telephone service provider for the entire U.S. for decades.
