New Breakthrough! Hengtong’s CPO Polarization-Maintaining Fiber Lays a New Foundation for AI Compute Interconnect with Sub-Micron Precision

2026-06-10 19:22:18

As the AI computing industry evolves at a rapid pace, CPO (Co-Packaged Optics) has emerged as a core technology for next-generation optical interconnect in AI data centers, thanks to its low latency, high bandwidth, and low power consumption. As one of the fundamental materials in CPO systems, the precision of polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber directly impacts system coupling efficiency and signal stability. Recently, Hengtong Optoelectric achieved a major technological breakthrough in its self-developed CPO PM fiber.

As the critical transmission medium that preserves the polarization state of optical signals, the process precision of PM fiber is the lifeline for stable CPO system operation. CPO packaging imposes extremely tight tolerance requirements—even sub-micron lateral misalignment can cause significant optical power loss. For a long time, conventional panda-type PM fibers have suffered from issues such as fluctuating bare-fiber diameter and asymmetric stress-applying parts (SAPs) in the "cat's eye" structure, making them inadequate for the iterative upgrades of high-end CPO technology—a common bottleneck across the industry. To address this challenge, Hengtong Optoelectric has delved deep into core fiber processing, achieving significant breakthroughs in fiber dimensional accuracy and SAP symmetry, thereby enabling the steady advancement of high-end CPO technology.

Leveraging its HPPD (High-Precision PM Fiber Drawing) technology, Hengtong employs precise tension control and an online real-time compensation system, improving bare-fiber diameter control accuracy to ±0.1 μm—substantially surpassing traditional process precision. This ultra-high diameter consistency effectively eliminates the error amplification issues in high-density fiber arrays, ensuring fiber positioning accuracy and silicon-photonics chip coupling efficiency in FAU (Fiber Array Unit) high-density packaging scenarios, and meeting the stringent assembly requirements of advanced CPO equipment.

Through its HPPQ (High-Precision Quartz Processing) technology, Hengtong precisely regulates the dimensions and positions of the "cat's eye" stress-applying parts, completely resolving the industry-wide problem of asymmetric SAPs ("big eye vs. small eye"), and achieving SAP symmetry within 0.2 μm—precisely meeting the "three-cores-in-line" alignment standard. This breakthrough greatly enhances fiber polarization stability and extinction ratio performance, ensuring ultra-low crosstalk from the source when external laser sources are coupled into the CPO system, and guaranteeing high-quality, stable transmission of high-speed optical signals.

Hengtong Optoelectric continues to proactively position itself around next-generation optical interconnect technologies. This breakthrough in PM fiber technology not only provides critical material support for CPO and other next-gen optical interconnect solutions, but also demonstrates Chinese enterprises' independent innovation capabilities in the high-end optical communications materials sector. Looking ahead, Hengtong Optoelectric will remain committed to advancing core specialty fiber technologies, breaking through technical barriers in high-end optical interconnect, and leveraging its self-developed, high-precision, high-stability optical materials to continuously empower the efficient and high-quality development of global AI computing infrastructure.

Looking ahead, Hengtong Optoelectric will persist in deepening core specialty fiber technologies, steadily overcoming technical hurdles in high-end optical interconnect, and with its self-developed, high-precision, high-stability optical communication materials, will continuously support the efficient and high-quality growth of global AI computing infrastructure.
