FiberHome and Shanghai Telecom Jointly Completed the First Single-wavelength 800G+OXC Pilot Network in China

2020-09-28 15:56:36

In September 2020, Shanghai Telecom and FiberHome completed the first single-wavelength 800G+OXC pilot network in China. The test used the FiberHome FONST 5000 X32 OXC equipment, which supports the industry's highest 32-dimensional scheduling capability, Pbit/s-level massive crossing capability, and is equipped with a flexible optical backplane to achieve all-optical crossing. This time, tests were conducted on 800G board functions and indicators, 800G OXC system stability, and OXC equipment multi-dimensional scheduling and protection functions. The test verified the technical maturity of ultra-high-dimensional optical cross-connect products and the technical reliability of the 800G ultra-high-speed transmission board, marking that Shanghai Telecom is striving to advance the high-bandwidth flexible scheduling optical transmission network to the commercial stage of the existing network.

Empower "Three Gigabytes" to help new infrastructure

At the 2020 "Telecom Three Gigabit, Empowering Shanghai's New Economy" press conference, Shanghai Telecom announced the "Building a Three Gigabit" strategy, which will more effectively promote the further improvement of Shanghai's information infrastructure. In order to help Shanghai Telecom achieve another upgrade of gigabit communications, and solve its requirements for optical network node equipment capacity, network scalability and transparent transmission of signals of different speed levels, FiberHome actively cooperates with the gradual implementation of joint testing on the existing network.

Since 2015, FiberHome has adopted 100G on the entire network to assist Shanghai Telecom in building OTN two planes to meet business development needs. In the following years, it has successively completed 2*200G and 600G tests. And this 800G+OXC pilot network verification is another new exploration of Shanghai Telecom and FiberHome for the evolution of the basic optical network to ultra-BB, reliable and efficient.

OXC technology creates value for basic optical network construction

Shanghai Telecom’s OTN two-plane is the industry’s first global three-dimensional metropolitan area optical network built with 20-dimensional WSS. Since the network was built in 2015, it has continued to lead the world through the continuous introduction and loading of new technologies. OXC technology realizes high-speed information transmission, exchange and failure recovery in the optical domain, and has the advantages of simple structure, high reliability, and good transparency. And its characteristics in basic optical network construction are mainly reflected in four aspects:

01. Digital optical layer

Use the wavelength label technology of optical layer top adjustment to realize the visualization of wavelength information.

02. LCoS

It has 32 dimensions and large cross-connect capacity; at the same time, the optical layer system can be flexibly configured to cope with ultra-long-distance scenarios. The built-in highly integrated OTDR and OXM board can perform real-time online detection of lines and internal ports of the device, greatly improving the efficiency of operation and maintenance.

03. Optical backplane

All-optical interconnection, no need to connect optical fiber; multi-level dustproof, high reliability, low insertion loss and precise docking. It solves the complicated problems of traditional reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexing fiber connection for customers, greatly simplifies fiber connection and reduces connection loss.

04. High integration

A single service board can realize optical layer transmission in one direction. Compared with traditional ROADM technology, its space occupancy rate can be reduced by 80%, saving valuable computer room resources.

800G makes OXC technology even more powerful

As the demand for transmission bandwidth continues to grow, high-density transmission technology is also evolving. FiberHome developed a single-wavelength 800G high-speed transmission service board, which is commonly used in FONST 5000 series products, and uses high baud rate solutions, Nyquist subcarriers, probability shaping, SD-FEC gain sharing and other new technologies to achieve single-wavelength rate 800Gb/s, which greatly improves the capacity distance product and minimizes the cost of a single bit. It also supports flexible rate/flexible modulation format, and supports single-span 100 km ultra-long distance transmission.

Compared with the traditional 100G system, the single fiber capacity of 800G ultra-high-speed transmission is 6 times that of the former. Compared with 100G service board, single bit power consumption can be reduced by 77%. It is suitable for large-capacity transmission of large-scale metro network core point interconnection and DC interconnection. It can also be used to carry a large number of 100GE services and future 400GE/600GE/800GE particle services.

In the 5G era, rich service types will further stimulate the development of optical network technology, and it is bound to bring new challenges to the transport network. FiberHome will adhere to the "ubiquitous, ultra-BB, open and on-demand" smart optical network development philosophy, and jointly promote the sustainable development of optical networks with Shanghai Telecom, create a bearer network with the best experience, and build a smart world with all things connected.
