Vodafone launches 700 Mbps 4.5G service in Madrid, Salamanca

2017-06-27 09:31:52

Vodafone Spain has launched a commercial service offering download speeds of up to 700 Mbps and upload speeds of 150Mbps using 4.5G technology in central parts of Madrid and Salamanca. The service can be accessed with Samsung’s latest S8 and S8+ smartphones and Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium and will be rolled out in central areas of Barcelona, Valencia, Malaga, Seville, Bilbao, Zaragoza and La Coruna over the coming months. Vodafone said its new 4.5G network uses a combination of advanced transmission techniques including carrier aggregation across at least three frequency bands (800/1800/2100 or 2600MHz), 256QAM and the Massive MIMO technology first trialled at MWC in February to achieve faster speeds. The upgrade has resulted in 5X capacity improvements per 4G antenna in the centre of Madrid, said the company.

Vodafone added that it’s currently the only operator with 20MHz in the band 2600MHz band, allowing it to deploy Massive MIMO and TDD technology. The operator said all customers with compatible handsets currently able to access the Vodafone 4G+ service will be automatically upgraded to 4.5G.

The company’s 4G+ (LTE-A) service offers download speeds of up to 350Mbps and is now available in 1,000 towns all over Spain.
