Infinera, Telia announce 600G breakthrough

2018-10-30 17:01:05

Telia Carrier and Infinera have teamed up to achieve a new milestone in bandwidth. In an announcement this morning, the two revealed what they bill as the first real-time 600Gbps wavelengths in a live production network.

The trial took place on Telia's fiber between Palo Alto and San Francisco, a short hop for a big payload. It leveraged Infinera's latest ICE5 technology, which features 64QAM and 69 gigabaud operation.

Telia's North American backbone has long been built off of dark fiber IRUs, which gives them an incentive to stay on the forefront of potential bandwidth per fiber. The company has been adding depth and breadth to its North American reach, and has been using Infinera gear to light its fiber for many years now.

Next on the menu for Infinera is 800G wavelengths, but in the nearer term the company plans to deliver 600G commercially early next year.
