Ooredoo to Launch 5G Home Broadband Device

2018-06-17 11:30:53

Qatar-based Ooredoo says it aims to become the first operator in the world to launch a 5G home broadband device, offering speeds of up to 2Gbps.

The operator is testing the devices on its live 5G network before distributing it to customers. The device will work across the Ooredoo 4G and 5G networks.

While currently only a limited number of 5G home broadband devices have been manufactured, Ooredoo said it is working to acquire more stock for the launch in the very near future

Ooredoo launched a live 5G network last month at a handful of sites, but without any compatible devices in its line-up to allow customers to take advantage of it. The operator has a target of upgrading 100 base stations across Qatar to 5G within the next three months.

The company's fixed wireless 5G network operates in the 3.5-GHz spectrum band, and testing indicates a peak speed of 2.51Gbps with very high throughput and low latency.

“Ooredoo is ecstatic to announce that last night, we became the first in the world to have a live commercial 5G home broadband device,” Ooredoo CEO Waleed Al Sayed said.

“This... demonstrates that we are on track to offering 5G mega speeds for everyone in the very near future. I look forward to seeing how this technology will benefit all sectors in Qatar, from businesses, to education and beyond.”
