SKT, Nokia to Trial Advanced Public Safety LTE Tech

SK Telecom has teamed up with Nokia to trial LTE video and voice public safety technologies in South Korea.

The companies are testing technologies designed to allow first responders to communicate using video, data and voice during emergency situations.

First responders will be able to use the technology to share mission-critical voice, video and other data in real time with multiple members of their teams.

The trials in Pyeongchang, Jeongseun and Gangneung are using Nokia's ViTrust public safety LTE network – which includes LTE radio access, cloud packet core and other commercially available technologies – interworking in the multi-vendor environment comprising SKT's existing evolved packet core system.

Nokia is also deploying its mission-critical push-to-talk technology to allow one-to-many communications using enhanced multimedia broadcast multicast services (eMBMS) technology to transmit HD video and other data.
