StarHub Accelerates Mobile Speeds to 1Gbps

2018-04-12 10:21:07

Singapore's StarHub has launched the city's first commercial 1Gbps mobile speeds as part of its ongoing network modernization program.

The company is allowing customers on its Unlimited Weekend postpaid mobile plans the ability to automatically access the improved speeds if they own a compatible handset.

StarHub's 1Gbps network was first deployed in Marina Bay and has now been expanded to cover the CBD as well as key shopping area, transport hubs and heartland town centers.

The operator plans to progressively expand coverage to other high traffic based on network traffic insights.

StarHub has handed Nokia a multi-year contract to deploy network upgrades to support the 1Gbps speeds using its advanced RAN, small cells, virtualized core and IP routing technologies. Nokia will also provide cloud orchestration and signaling, network management, security and other solutions for the operator.

“Amid the growing appetite for mobile data, we are maximizing the use of our spectrum assets for customers to enjoy enhanced network speed and service quality before 5G arrives,” StarHub CTO Chong Siew Loong said.

“By pushing the boundaries of technology in collaboration with Nokia, we want to bolster Singapore’s standing as one of the world’s fastest, smartest and most connected countries.”

Compatible 1Gbps 4G handsets include the Huawei Mate 10 Pro, P20 and P20 Pro, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ and the Sony Xperia X22, StarHub said.
