How much of a risk do cyberattacks really pose for businesses? What can businesses do to protect themselves? The growing interconnectedness of all things is opening up myriad new ways for criminals to steal data and sabotage business processes. CeBIT 2017 will show the digital world what effective protection against these threats looks like, with an exciting array of innovative solutions and proven applications. The biggest and best of these will be at the Business Security showcase in Hall 6.
Hannover. Inadequately protected links between production plants and the Web are among the most serious risks posed by today’s rapidly growing Internet of Things. At CeBIT 2017, the cyber security division of Airbus will present its solution to this problem: a secure remote maintenance system. Visitors will be able to view a working security architecture that can be integrated into legacy access control mechanisms, thereby upgrading them with effective monitoring functionality (Hall 6/Stand G30).
Microsoft will also be there. It will in fact be the first time the company has had a presence at the Business Security showcase. Enterprises are finding that traditional pre-breach defenses, such as anti-virus and anti-malware solutions, are no longer sufficient to ward off today’s increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks. Microsoft has therefore developed a post-breach security layer for its Windows 10 operating system. Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) enables Microsoft’s enterprise customers to detect, investigate and respond to advanced threats on their networks (Hall 7/Stand A14).
Trend Micro, Rohde & Schwarz and Sophos: Protection for integrated manufacturing, connected cars and smart homes
Trend Micro will present range of cyber security application scenarios, including protection solutions for business processes, smart factories and smart cars. The company will be showing visitors how they can defend against the threat of business process compromise, how to protect industrial control systems in manufacturing processes, and how they can use cloud-based security solutions to safeguard connected cars. Trend Micro will also be running a live hack of an in-car entertainment system (Hall 6/Stand B16).
Many machines now communicate with one another via web-based services. “Web applications are integral to tomorrow’s cloud-based business models and are therefore key drivers of the digital transformation. But their success hinges on having the right security solutions in place,” says Ammar Alkassar, CEO of Rohde & Schwarz Cybersecurity. At CeBIT, the German-based security provider will be presenting a range of new products that protect web-based services against cyberattacks (Hall 6/Stand J16).
The Internet of Things is just as much about personal and domestic things as it is about industrial and business ones. The problem is that it is all too easy to overlook the risks posed by all those web-connected devices and appliances. To illustrate this, Sophos and its partners have initiated “Haunted House,” a research project in which white hats are invited to hack into various systems of an interactive model smart home installation via the Web. “Haunted House” will be on display at CeBIT. Visitors will be able to look on as hacker exploits are perpetrated in real time (Hall 6/Stand F18).
DERMALOG, secunet, Cisco and Bundesdruckerei: new frontiers in security
Effective border control systems play a key role in preventing the spread of terrorism. DERMALOG specializes in this area and will be using CeBIT to showcase its VF1 system, the world’s first combined fingerprint and passport scanner. The system is designed for integration into eGates, kiosks and mobile devices at airports and is able to scan fingerprints, electronic passports, air tickets, signatures and QR codes. It also has applications in the banking sector (Hall 6/Stand J39).
Meanwhile, secunet will be showcasing “easykiosk,” an automated self-service terminal for use at international border control points. The terminal enables travelers to enter certain identity data themselves, thereby streamlining the overall border control process. secunet also has a solution that enables operators of critical infrastructure to separate their networks into securely interconnected security zones (6/J30).
This year, Cisco is exhibiting at the Business Security showcase for the very first time. At its Partner Pavilion, it will present a next-generation firewall solution. The Cisco Firepower 2100 Series Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW) delivers up to 200 percent greater data throughput, thereby preventing security bottlenecks. The company also has a number of new software tools that make it easier for businesses to manage their firewalls. These include the Cisco Firepower Device Manager for local device configuration, the Firepower Management Center for centralized security management needs, and the Defense Orchestrator for cloud-based management (Hall 6/Stand J02).
Bundesdruckerei will be using CeBIT to premiere a new high-security cloud storage solution. The company’s BDrive platform encrypts the user’s documents and splits them into fragments which only the user can reassemble.Each fragment is then stored on multiple commercial cloud storage services. BDrive uses the RAIC (Redundant Array of Independent Clouds) security concept for the first time. (Hall 7/Stand E17)
Kaspersky Lab, SonicWall, Secusmart, Cortado and IBM: AI, antiransomware and protection against phone tapping
With the rise of the IoT, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that e-mail is still the most commonly used channel for cyberattacks. Typically, this method of attack involves trojans that install ransomware on the victim’s computer. According to a recent Kaspersky Lab report on spam and phishing, Germany is the country most targeted by malicious mailshots. Kaspersky Lab will be at the Business Security showcase with its latestanti-ransomware solutions. It will also present next-generation solutions that use AI to help predict, detect and respond to cyber security incidents (Hall 6/Stand G18).
SonicWall likewise reports a dramatic rise in the incidence of ransomware attacks. It will be leveraging CeBIT to showcase its new security platform to combat this problem. SonicWall E-Mail Security 9.0 protects businesses against extortion and other cyber threats by scanning a range of different e-mail attachment types, analyzing them in a separate area and quarantining them until they can be reviewed by a system administrator (Hall 6/Stand E03).
Tap-proof voice and data communication is another area of the security landscape that is receiving a great deal of attention at the moment. It is an area in which BlackBerry subsidiary Secusmart has products that are trusted by more than 20 governments worldwide. And with SecuSUITE for Samsung Knox, Secusmart now offers an encrypted communication solution for Android smartphones as well (Hall 6/Stand J28).
More and more businesses are using enterprise file synchronization and sharing (EFSS) services. With these types of services, the primary consideration, apart from ease and speed of collaboration, is security. With this in mind, the latest corporate server solution by Cortado features Virtual Data Rooms that off-site employees can use to access shared files and collaborate with on-site employees. The data rooms are located behind firewalls on on-premises servers, not in the public cloud (Hall 3/Stand D11).
Looking ahead to the future, IBM will be showcasing the IT security capabilities of augmented intelligence with its new Watson for Cyber Security cognitive security technology. Unlike conventional security tools, Watson for Cyber Security is able to parse natural language, meaning it can rapidly analyze security reports and interact with humans. It has the potential to analyze complex security threats in mere minutes, rather than the weeks it would take humans (Hall 2/Stand A10).
